Thresholds above which a permit is needed

Values for a typical combination: tractor unit with semi-trailer or rigid vehicle with trailer, 5 axles, standard width.

Width2.55 m [Z3]
Height4.00 m [Z3]
Length, tractor unit + semi-trailer16.50 m [Z3]
Length, rigid vehicle + trailer18.75 m [Z3]
Gross combination weight (5 axles)44.00 t [Z3]
Single axle loadNot confirmed
Drive axle loadNot confirmed

Values for a typical 5-axle combination (lowest value in the regulation); higher conditional limits only in the notes. Maximum dimensions of an articulated combination under Art. 4 Code de la route (Z3): 16.50 m, 2.55 m, 4.00 m, 44.00 t; truck + trailer combination 18.75 m (Z3, p. 26, 34). Weight of a coupled combination 44 t (Art. 12 para. 3 point 4°) — one value for every combination, without distinguishing the number of axles; the limits of the component vehicles under Art. 12 para. 3 (2-axle motor vehicle 19 t; 3-axle trailer 24 t with mechanical suspension / 30 t with air suspension) may lower the permissible weight of a truck + trailer combination (e.g. 19 + 24 = 43 t) — check the registration certificates; Art. 12 para. 1: never above the weight in the registration certificate; 5-axle motor vehicle up to 50 t if the conditions of Art. 12 para. 7 are met (incl. ≤ 11.5 t per axle, on-board weighing, ≥ 3 steered axles). Rear load overhang up to 2.00 m allowed without a permit since 3.01.2021 (Art. 9). A permit is also required for non-standard vehicles travelling unladen. General axle load limits were not read (the extract does not include Art. 12 para. 2); in category 1–2 permits the axle load is max. 12 t, above that → category 3. Material Z3 dates from May 2022 — the current text of the AGD of 23.11.1955 is binding. [Z3]
