Oversize load permit in Denmark (2026): authority, thresholds, fees
This page summarises what the official sources listed below say about oversize (abnormal) load permits in Denmark. Numbers link to their source. Values the sources do not confirm are marked “Not confirmed”.
Key facts
Issuing authority
All særtransport permits in Denmark are issued by Vejdirektoratet (§ 21 para. 2 BEK 635). Where the road class is exceeded or dimensions exceed 30.00 m / 4.50 m / 4.50 m (or vehicle class > 100), Vejdirektoratet negotiates with the competent road/bridge authority (§ 20). Crossing Storebælt and Øresundsbroen requires separate arrangements with the bridge operators (Storebælt A/S, Øresundsbron). Contact: [email protected], tel. 7244 2323; particularly large transports: Task Force Særtransport [email protected]. [Z1]
Application channel
Særtransport application portal (Ansøgningsportal særtransport) on virk.dk; separate e-application for a classification certificate (webklassificering / virk.dk 'Tunge Transporter – Anmodning om klassificering af køretøjer') [Z5]
Login / access: Danish companies: MitID Erhverv. Foreign applicants: their own national eID via eIDAS ('CEF Digital – connecting Europe', International tab → choice of country). If the country has no eIDAS connection, login is not possible — the application form must be requested from [email protected].
Thresholds above which a permit is needed
Values for a typical combination: tractor unit with semi-trailer or rigid vehicle with trailer, 5 axles, standard width.
| Width | 3.30 m [Z3] |
|---|---|
| Height | 4.10 m [Z3] |
| Length, tractor unit + semi-trailer | 18.50 m [Z3] |
| Length, rigid vehicle + trailer | 18.75 m [Z3] |
| Gross combination weight (5 axles) | 44.00 t [Z3] |
| Single axle load | 10.00 t [Z3] |
| Drive axle load | 11.50 t [Z3] |
Values for a typical 5-axle combination (lowest value in the regulations); higher conditional limits are given only here. Indivisible load without a permit (BEK 635 §§ 28–31, Z3; Vejdirektoratet Z2: 'tilladelsesfrie særtransporter 3.3 m × 4.1 m × 30 m (B × H × L) – dog længde op til 15 m for sololastbil' — 30 m is the conditional maximum, not the typical value). Width up to 3.30 m — rigid vehicle and rigid vehicle + trailer/semi-trailer combination (§ 28 stk. 1). Height: a permit is needed above 4.10 m (§ 13 point 1 BEK 635), although the new dimensionsbekendtgørelse (§ 13 stk. 2 BEK 1447, Z4) allows 4.20 m for trucks — a discrepancy between the acts; the lower threshold from BEK 635 is used. Length of tractor unit + semi-trailer in the table = 18.50 m (§ 30 stk. 1 nr 1 BEK 635); higher only conditionally: 22.00 m with an extendable semi-trailer (udtræk) or with a koblingslængde > 12.00 m (§ 30 stk. 1 nr 2), 30.00 m additionally with forced steering of all axles (§ 30 stk. 1 nr 3). Rigid truck alone up to 15.00 m (§ 29). Motor vehicle + trailer in the table = 18.75 m — general limit (§ 11 stk. 1 BEK 1447, Z4); 23.00 m without a permit only when the specific transport requires that length and the conditions of § 31 BEK 635 are met (including a crane). Weight in the table = 44.00 t: 'andre vogntog' (§ 21 stk. 2 nr 14 BEK 1447, Z4) — the lowest value for a 5-axle combination; higher only for other configurations: 5-axle vogntog truck + registreringspligtigt påhængskøretøj 47 t (nr 13), 6 axles 50–53 t (nr 10–12), ≥ 7 axles 58 t (nr 9); at > 44 t for a sættevogntog the distance between the axles of the tractor unit and the semi-trailer ≥ 3.00 m (§ 21 stk. 6). A condition also for 44 t and less (§ 21 stk. 5 BEK 1447, Z4): „I sættevogntog med fem eller flere aksler skal afstanden mellem bilens bageste aksel og sættevognens forreste aksel være mindst 2.50 m. Afstanden skal dog være mindst 3.00 m, hvis sættevognen har tre aksler, hvor nogen indbyrdes afstand er mindre end 1.10 m” — with 5+ axles the distance between the last axle of the tractor unit and the first axle of the semi-trailer ≥ 2.50 m (≥ 3.00 m when a 3-axle semi-trailer has an axle spacing < 1.10 m); for lastbil + påhængsvogn ≥ 3.00 m (§ 21 stk. 7), and with 5 axles and > 46 t ≥ 3.50 m (§ 21 stk. 8). With a shorter distance the 44 t weight in the table does not apply. Any excess of the weights/axle loads in the dimensionsbekendtgørelsen requires a classification certificate and a permit. Axle loads: axle 10.00 t (§ 14 BEK 1447), drive axle with twin wheels and road-friendly suspension 11.50 t (BEK 1447 § 14). The Vejdirektoratet website still gives '56 ton' as the permitted combination weight — data from before BEK 1447. [Z3]
Permit types
| Permit | Scope | Validity | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-trip permit Engangstilladelse |
Single trip | For the requested journey on the specified route | No upper dimension limit in the regulation; above 30.00 / 4.50 / 4.50 m or class > 100, consultation with the road authorities (§ 20) [Z1] |
| Route permit (for a specified route) Strækningstilladelse |
Periodic (time-limited) | Up to 5 years | For documented repeated transports on the same route; to a limited extent also above the limits of the general permit (§ 23 para. 4) [Z3] |
| General permit (road network) Generel tilladelse |
Periodic (time-limited) | Up to 5 years | Oversize transports up to 30.00 m length / 3.65 m width / 4.10 m height on any routes; heavy transports up to class 100 on the Tungvognsvejnettet network (§ 23 para. 2–3) [Z3] |
| Classification certificate (precondition for heavy transports) Klassifikationsattest / klassificeringsattest |
Permanent | Not confirmed | Required before applying for any permit when the weights/axle loads in the dimensionsbekendtgørelsen are exceeded; classification by road wear (Æ10) and bridge load capacity [Z2] |
Processing time
From a complete application 1–10 working days, depending on complexity (Vejdirektoratet). The application must be submitted 'in good time', taking into account the number of authorities to be consulted (§ 21 BEK 635). In the portal an urgent transport within 24 hours can be marked. [Z1]
Fees
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Official fee for a særtransport permit — no information on a fee was found in the official sources (Vejdirektoratet website, virk.dk, BEK 635) | Not confirmed [Z1] |
Fees are not confirmed in the official sources read.
Escort
Private escort vehicle
An escort vehicle (ledsagebil) is mandatory when the length is > 30.00 m or the width > 3.65 m (on a motorway > 4.00 m), and on a motorway at a permitted speed ≤ 45 km/h regardless of dimensions. On roads with a central reservation it drives behind; on roads without a central reservation at a width > 3.65 m — in front. An additional vehicle behind when the driver cannot see along the sides of the load and the load projects > 2.00 m from the vehicle axis. Escort driver: driving licence of the same category, a language shared with the transport driver and one of: Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, German, English; permanent radio contact + telephone (§§ 41–43 BEK 635). [Z3]
Police escort
When the journey requires traffic control, the transport must be accompanied by the police or by persons authorised to control traffic for særtransport (§ 27 para. 9). Vejdirektoratet may, in the permit conditions, impose an escort and an obligation to notify the police before each journey (§ 25). With police assistance the number of escort vehicles may be smaller (§ 41 para. 6). [Z3]
Required documents
- Application in the portal on virk.dk: details of the applicant and the haulier, transport period, type/weight/dimensions of the load and of the transport (also without load), route drawn in the map module (for a general permit — the area) [Z5]
- Classification certificate (klassifikationsattest) — where weights/axle loads are exceeded [Z1]
- Certificate for the low-loader / modules (blokvognsattest) and certificate for the towing vehicle (attest for trækkraft for blokvogn); for foreign vehicles, instead of these, data on weights, dimensions and technical data of the vehicle (§ 21 para. 5) [Z3]
- Other attachments as needed (e.g. survey), each as a separate file [Z6]
- In the vehicle: the permit (may be electronic), a printout 'Udskrift til særtransport' from vd.dk not older than 5 days; if no one reads Danish — a written translation of the permit and the conditions (bilag 1 point 2 and 16) [Z3]
Traffic restrictions
General and section-specific blocking periods (spærretider) are set by Vejdirektoratet together with the police and the road authorities (§ 20 para. 5); the driver must carry the printout 'Udskrift til særtransport' (≤ 5 days) with the blocking periods and conditions for the route. Heat block: 1 May–1 October, daily 13:00–18:00, for transports with a road class > 80, announced by 11:00 on the same day. Old Storstrømsbroen bridge: ban on > 10 t actual weight. [Z2]
